Abstract

The purpose of the present article is to examine the role of the playground in the development of health-related fitness in childhood. A brief narrative review will be provided that focuses on contemporary trends in childhood play behaviour, as well as highlight various environmental factors that influence playground design, accessibility, and use in urban settings. Moreover, specific features of the playground will be discussed relative to the opportunities they provide for the development of fundamental movement skills, the components of health-related fitness, and the development of the sensory motor system in young children.
