Abstract

Backgrounds: Adults and older-adults from BME communities in the UK are less likely than their non-BME counterparts to meet the physical-activity recommendations Purpose: To investigate the factors associated with physical-activity among adults and older-adults from the Somali Community in Bristol, United Kingdom. Methods: A sequential exploratory mixed methods design initiated by a systematic review of barriers and facilitators of physical-activity among adults and older-adults from BME groups in the UK, followed by a cross-sectional survey of factors associated with physical-activity among adults and older-adults from the Somali community. Studies were included in the review if they reported on the experiences, barriers and facilitators of physical-activity among adults aged 40 and above. Ten studies conducted between 2007 and 2017 met the inclusion criteria. The survey was underpinned by the Capability-Opportunity-Motivations and Behaviour (COM-B) framework and was completed by 148 participants. Levels of physical-activity was measured using the short-form of International-Physical-activity-Questionnaire (IPAQ) while other validated questionnaires including the Health-Survey-for-England informed the survey design. Result: Findings from the systematic review suggests a substantial gap in research among Black African groups. Over three-quarters of respondents (78%) reported low physical-activity levels while 19% of respondents reported moderate physical-activity levels and only 3% met the requirement for high IPAQ physical-activity levels. The findings show a significant association between IPAQ score of respondents and gender, age, employment status and level of education (p<0.05). Conclusion: Urgent actions are required to address the barriers of physical-activity among BME communities in the UK.
